Receiving & Shipping Manager

Position: Full-Time

Compensation:  $17- $21 per hour based on qualifications and experience

Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park has an opening for a Receiving and Shipping Manager. We are looking for someone experienced and detail-oriented, with a passion for books and reading, to co-lead and co-manage our receiving and shipping operations in collaboration with an existing full-time Receiving and Shipping Manager.

This position offers the opportunity to fill a crucial role in the operations of a world-renowned bookstore and local cultural landmark.  This position reports to the Store Manager and works closely with the current Receiving and Shipping Manager and Buyers. 

Major job responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising a team receiving daily incoming shipments of books and merchandise, including doing hands-on receiving 

  • Supervising returns of unsold books to publishers, including doing hands-on returns

  • Ensuring accuracy and consistency in store inventory operations 

  • Helping buyers and store manager with inventory management to achieve healthy store metrics

  • Working collaboratively with another Receiving and Shipping Manager to ensure constant communication between the receiving and shipping team, Buyers, and store management

  • Collaborating with Store Manager to ensure there is sufficient capacity of trained staff available to handle store’s receiving and shipping needs

  • Supporting online/web order fulfillment and customer ship-outs

  • Ensuring the receiving room stays clean, organized, and functional at all times

  • Managing relationships and troubleshooting issues with book publishers, distributors, and carriers, relevant to this position and job responsibilities

  • Training and supporting new staff on back office operations

  • Generating and analyzing reports to support inventory management

  • Working on the retail bookstore floor as a bookseller to help customers find and purchase great books, share information about our programs and events, and contribute to daily store operations including event set up

  • Working on special store projects as requested by store management

  • Working nights and weekends as needed

Ideal candidates will have/ be:

  • Previous experience working in a bookstore or other shipping / receiving environment

  • Process oriented with a bias for tracking metrics/analytics

  • Agility in a fast-paced work environment

  • An obsession with details, and is a proactive problem-solver with loads of initiative

  • Comfortable performing repetitive tasks swiftly and accurately

  • Self-starting, and be able to work without much direction

  • Patience and grace in high-touch customer service situations

  • Exceptional critical thinking skills

  • Top-notch communication skills

  • Collaborative and comfortable working in a team-oriented environment

  • Able to lift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs on a regular basis

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite, with a strong knowledge of Microsoft EXCEL

  • We use IBID-ie as a POS system, so experience with that is a plus

  • Strong reader who loves to share that knowledge and passion, and a familiarity with various genres and categories of books
