Assistant Bookstore Manager

Compensation: $21 / hour + Bonus Eligible              

Hours: 38-40 hours / week

Job Summary

As the Assistant BXstore Manager, your role supports the General Manager in upholding excellent operational standards, providing exceptional customer service, and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in both our bookstore and wine bar. You'll have a prominent presence on the sales floor, engaging directly with our guests, while also dedicating office hours to handle administrative tasks. With your extensive expertise covering all facets of The Lit. Bar's public-facing and back-end operations, your intrapreneurial spirit will be highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the bookstore and bar, ensuring efficient and effective workflow
  • Delegate floor tasks, provide clear direction, and offer troubleshooting support to the BXseller team
  • Liaise with the General Manager to facilitate hiring, scheduling, training, and performance reviews
  • Serve as a keyholder and lead open/close and maintenance duties
  • Manage inventory, including ordering and picking up supplies and groceries
  • Deliver outstanding customer service, onboarding B2B clients, and resolving customer complaints promptly and professionally
  • Execute E-Commerce activities, including order processing, inventory management, and fulfillment
  • Support sales and marketing initiatives, contributing to strategies, setting goals, execution, and analyzing sales data
  • Handle financial and administrative tasks, such as accounts payable, cash handling, preparing reports, and maintaining records
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the employee handbook and policies and procedures manual
  • Implement effective merchandising strategies to drive sales through inventory displays and visual tactics


The Nitty-Gritty

The Assistant BXstore Manager must have…

  • A least 1 year of management or shift lead experience, preferably in a bookstore, other retail, or hospitality environment
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Food Handler’s Certification within one month of employment
  • A passion for books, storytelling, and community engagement, with a commitment to promoting diverse voices and perspectives through cultural programming
  • An appreciation for wine
  • Exceptional customer service skills, in-person and in writing
  • Basic financial acumen, including accounts payable and cash handling
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, maintaining the highest degree of tact and confidentiality
  • Proficiency with project management software, Google Suite, and Excel
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays


It’s a plus if you have…

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Familiarity with online order fulfillment processes
  • Experience with our point-of-sale system, Bookmanager
  • Knowledge of bookselling, literature, and publishing trends
  • Completed:
    • NAIBA’s Professional Booksellers Certification: Store Management
    • A degree or certification in a related field, such as hospitality, communications, or project management
    • Fluency in Spanish
