DESCRIPTION

Shambhala Publications is currently looking for a full-time Art Director. This position oversees all aspects of interior book design and composition for Snow Lion and Shambhala imprints. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Responsible for hiring and managing freelance designers.
• Evaluate materials provided by editorial and develop design briefs.
• Responsible for working with designers to produce original layouts, appropriate to the title.
• Act as the liaison between the editorial and design teams.
• Act as a liaison between Bala freelancers and in-house staff.
• Circulate design layouts to editorial team, Publisher, and President.
• Oversee 3-5 rounds of proofs, communicating changes to compositor through completion of job.
• Work closely with Production Manager to determine the best manufacturing materials for each project.
• Coordinate interior book designs with Creative Director.
• Execute interior design projects, through the life of the design process, on a regular basis.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

• Thorough knowledge of book design and layout
• Thorough knowledge of Adobe CC
• Must be knowledgeable of current trends in the industry
• Understanding of paper, bindings, printed styles

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Excellent management skills
• Ability to adhere to strict deadlines
• Excellent time management skills
• Advanced problem-solving skills
• Ability to work with a variety of people
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Attention to detail

EXPERIENCE

• 5-8 years’ experience in interior book design
• Management experience helpful
• Familiarity in subject matter helpful
