On Veterans Day, this coming Friday, November 11, the History Channel will air a new documentary based on The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour
by James D. Hornfischer (Bantam, $14, 0553381482). This book is an account of the
battle off Samar, a part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944,
when a small U.S. Navy task force held off a far superior Japanese
force. The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors won the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature
last year. The documentary airs at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday.
