Cool Idea of the Day: New Books for New Homeowners

The 10 families who will move into Morton's Walk, the two-story row houses being constructed by Habitat for Humanity on Alexander Street in Albany, N.Y., "will get word-filled house-warming gifts," thanks to a campaign led by the Albany City Area Reading Council, the Times Union reported.

"We hope to fill a whole bookshelf for each family," said ACARC president Liz Yanoff. "These are things families like to have in their home, that they might not have had before. The ACARC is made up of teachers, librarians and educators who know the importance of reading, both in school and in the home.... This project is a natural extension of our mission."

The books are being collected through today by the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, which offered a 20% discount on purchases and staff recommendations for each family.

Capital District Habitat for Humanity executive director Michael Jacobson told the Times Union that the books will find good homes: "Hammers and books, most people probably don't see the relationship between these two items. When asked, most children of our Habitat homeowners will tell you the most important thing about having a home of their own is the hope of getting a good night's sleep and a quiet place to read and do their homework."
