Trope Romance Book Bus Opening Physical Store in Charlotte, N.C.

Trope Bookshop, a mobile romance bookstore, will open its first storefront on March 1 in a 1,000-square-foot space at 1516 Lyon Court in Plaza Midwood, Charlotte, N.C., Axios reported.

Owner Katie Mitchell, who launched her book bus, known as the Green Girl, in October 2023, is working with her team to renovate the location, installing shelves and painting everything to match the Green Girl. She posted an Instagram video updating the renovation process.

Describing the design as "dark and moody, with an English pub-style interior," Axios noted that the bookstore will sell only romance books. The Green Girl will continue to do two or three pop-ups a month after the storefront opens.

In a q&a with CLTtoday, Mitchell said of the opportunity to have a larger space: "I feel like we were sort of at an inflection point with the bus. I was incredibly lucky--it was a lot of hard work--but it went super well and we really have hit our stride and hit a point where it was time to start thinking about our options. Like, do we invest in like a second bus? Do we start entertaining a second bus or a new bus or pivot? So we started looking for a storefront. I'm so excited and frankly, there will be more room. We needed more space."

She also noted that the physical store will allow Trope Bookshop to host more author signings and book talks: "It's hard to book somebody to come and do a book signing when I don't have anywhere for them to set up inside the bus. So that was a huge factor. But I love to host stuff. I like to have community and feel like people have a place they can bring their new book or do a signing. That's really important to me."
