When There Are Wolves Again by E.J. Swift has won the £2,026 (about $2,735) Arthur C. Clarke Award for the best science fiction novel published in the U.K. last year. According to the Guardian, the winning novel "follows two women across half a century in a near-future Britain.... Their separate journeys eventually converge in 2070."
Chair of judges Andrew M. Butler called When There Are Wolves Again "a story of environmental change and possible recovery."
Describing the winner as an "ambitious study in the power of long-term hope in the face of climate breakdown," Tom Hunter, the award's director, added: "Science fiction at its most powerful is often not about predicting the future but showing us that no one future has to be inevitable."
