Expanding and Launching New Lines

Hidden Universe Travel Guides
The first of the Hidden Universe Travel Guides, a new line of travel guides for fictional places, is Star Trek: Vulcan by Dayton Ward, focusing on the planet in Star Trek that was home to Spock. With the feel of a traditional travel guide, Vulcan focuses on the "culture, places, and customs" of Vulcan, as senior editor Chris Prince puts it. The book includes notes about the Vulcan language, dining, and nightlife, details about the planet's geography, and even a hilarious essay by Dr. McCoy sheepishly praising Vulcan. Because not much information was given about Vulcan in the series and movies, like a great deal of Insight Editions' work, much of the book was created in the spirit of the franchise and with its huge fandom in mind. Art director Chrissy Kwasnik notes that it was challenging collecting enough assets from the various films and the television series to produce a comprehensive travel guide for Vulcan: "Due to that challenge, we ended up hiring illustrators to create all original illustrations from scratch, and that ended freeing us up creatively in deciding what the travel guide could do and show." But the decision has paid off, as Prince says that the fan reaction has been great.

In October, the next in the series, The Complete Marvel Cosmos by Mark Sumerak, appears (see fall titles, below), which will include "cheeky commentary from the Guardians of the Galaxy," according to Prince.

In Spring 2017, Insight Editions is planning a travel guide to the Klingon Empire, with others in the series on the way.

Insight Comics

Insight Editions is launching Insight Comics, which will focus on a range of comics and graphic novels that include original and licensed titles, in addition to translations of bestselling foreign writers and artists. The comics line is "a natural progression for us, a labor of love," says executive editor Vanessa Lopez, who adds that the comics will be based on the hallmarks of Insight Editions' general approach: "premium art, storytelling, and quality."

Mark Irwin, who recently joined the company as a senior editor focusing on comics and collectibles, says, "What's exciting about this imprint is the incredible production and creative resources that Insight brings to the table. From original stories to amazing licensed material to the finest foreign content, Insight Comics will bring a level of quality and unique craftsmanship to its offerings."

The titles will be either hardcover graphic novels or multivolume trade paperbacks and will release quarterly.

Pop Culture Cookbooks
Insight Editions is expanding its cookbook line, adding two to the fall lineup: Adventure Time: The Official Cookbook and World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook. As Michael Madden notes, "We've dabbled in cookbooks. Now we're focused on them. They're fun, creative, and even whimsical at times."

Vanessa Lopez noted that fans have been excited about the line--the World of Warcraft cookbook already has substantial presales. She adds that it's been challenging working on the two upcoming cookbooks that have ingredients that "don't exist in our world." Her favorite example: lobster soul. Still, the books' recipes are for real foods, with luscious photos typical of traditional cookbooks.

"Food and parties are a big part of Adventure Time," Lopez adds, "so the cookbook is a natural extension of that world." On the menu for next spring: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Official Pizza Cookbook.

Terry Newell observes that these cookbooks are typical of Insight Editions' approach and clientele: "We create books for fans who have gotten so into gaming, movies, and television that they stopped buying as many books. Those readers might not buy regular cookbooks, but they will buy these. By publicizing books like these at Comic Cons and on social media, we've presold thousands."

Coloring Books
For Insight Editions, coloring books, which continue to grow in popularity, have been tremendously successful--and the company is convinced that the category will continue to thrive. As Raoul Goff put it, "We don't think readers are suddenly going to become uninterested in coloring."

Insight Editions has been a major player in adult coloring books in the past few years through its packaging operations. One example is the Harry Potter coloring book series, which were licensed and produced by Insight. Scholastic published the books in North America. Worldwide, the series boasts sales exceeding four million copies and have been a phenomenon. The series of Harry Potter coloring books feature intricate line drawings created from scratch or developed from the Warner Bros. archive.

Just last month, Insight Editions published DC Comics Coloring Book, full of illustrations of the "most iconic covers and scenes from DC Comics history." Coming up this fall is Supernatural: The Official Coloring BookAssassin's Creed: The Official Coloring BookDinosaurs: A Coloring Book by William Stout, and DC Comics: Wonder Woman Coloring Book.

Michael Madden emphasizes that while most coloring books on the market are black-and-white productions, Insight Editions coloring books feature, appropriately enough, a section of full-color artwork for reference and inspiration.

Journals and Stationery
The company's journals are "collectible and unique," says Michael Madden. Many are tied into a TV series, film, or game in creative ways. For example, the Game of Thrones line includes journals for each of the major houses in the series, while the Harry Potter journal feature Hogwarts, Gryffindor and the Deathly Hallows. The DC Comics line--which includes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and the Joker--were made to appear as though they once belonged to the character. As a result, they begin with notes and illustrations written by a core character from the DC universe before giving way to blank pages. Other journals are based on popular TV shows like The Flash, Arrow, and The Walking Dead.

The Harry Potter Hogwarts Stationery Set includes envelopes, stationery, a wax seal set and a crest paperweight enclosed in a keepsake box. Vanessa Lopez notes that readers have been sending in letters to Insight Editions on that stationery expressing their appreciation of the set. Insight Editions' stationery line continues to expand with new journals for fans of Minions, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Supernatural, and Destiny, as well as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and more Harry Potter journals and deluxe stationery sets.
