ABOUT THE POSITION:
The President and Publisher is the chief executive officer of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation with authority to conduct the day-to-day operations of the Corporation and make publishing decisions for the Corporation. The President and Publisher will build on PPC’s long history and reputation and provide innovative, mission-driven leadership to lead it into a fruitful and sustainable future. The successful candidate will be deeply committed to the church and its mission, to PPC’s commitment to justice and anti-racism, and to building a thriving publishing house in a competitive and challenging environment. The President and Publisher works closely with the Board of Directors, denominational leaders, and executive leadership to establish new strategic directions and a vision for longterm success for the organization.
LOCATION: Hybrid, with travel to Louisville, KY and constituent locations as appropriate.
ELECTION AND REPORTING: The President and Publisher is elected by the PPC Board of Directors, with confirmation of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The President and Publisher reports to the PPC Board of Directors.
SUPERVISES: The President and Publisher provides direct supervision of the corporate officers and executive staff of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Envision new strategic directions for the organization and ensure the alignment of strategy and resources.
- Form and maintain relationships with other General Assembly entities, middle governing bodies, ecumenical partners, and leaders in the academy to continually assess needs of the church and seek opportunities for PPC to partner and better serve its constituents.
- Develop and model corporate values and culture, with an emphasis on justice and inclusion.
- Lead editorial focus and publication directions.
- Manage the executive leadership team and provide oversight into all functions of the organization, including but not limited to editorial, production, marketing, operations, and sales.
- Direct financial management and be responsible for the financial performance of PPC.
- Hold overall accountability for the corporate structure, staffing (including compensation and benefits), and health of the organization.
- Lead any funds development activities of the organization, including leading fundraising campaigns and grant funding opportunities.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
General and Industry Knowledge Desired:
- Knowledge of book publishing and curriculum development, including key competitors, industry trends, and needs of the market.
- Knowledge of the key audiences of PPC, including the religious academic market and the needs of mainline churches.
- Knowledge of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) including its structure and ethos.
Work Experience:
- Significant experience in book publishing preferred, ideally with experience in religious publishing.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact with constituents at all levels.
- Proven track record of leading an organization through continuous change while remaining focused on longterm goals.
- Proven experience managing large-scale projects.
- Fiscal acumen and knowledge of sound business practices.
Other:
- A member of a PC(USA) congregation or other experience working directly with congregations.
- Ability to integrate and balance the needs of an organization that is both a ministry and a business serving a wide variety of communities and individuals.
Education:
- Master’s Degree in Business, Religion, Journalism, or a related field, or an undergraduate degree in the same areas with extensive experience in publishing or a closely related field.
