Beacon Press is launching Fort Point, a fiction imprint "dedicated to publishing ambitious new works from emerging and established writers." While Beacon is well known for its nonfiction and poetry, it has, during its 170-year history, published fiction, including Octavia E. Butler's Kindred, Gayl Jones's Palmares and The Birdcatcher, Joanna Russ's The Female Man, and Ruthanne Lum McCunn's Thousand Pieces of Gold, among others.

"Fort Point will champion fiction that invites readers into new ways of seeing and inspires new generations to imagine a more expansive world," said Gayatri Patnaik, director of Beacon Press. In addition to Patnaik, acquiring editors will include editorial director Amy Caldwell, editor Maya Fernandez, and editor Haley Lynch.
The imprint is named after Boston's historic Fort Point district, which has transformed from an industrial waterfront into a thriving arts community, and is now one of the city's most dynamic neighborhoods.
Beacon added that "at a time when readers are seeking fiction that is both immersive and thought-provoking, Fort Point will publish work across a broad spectrum--from literary fiction to books that bridge commercial storytelling and public discourse--including contemporary, speculative, and select genre fiction."
