Editorial Director

Position: Full-Time, Hybrid

Bloomsbury Academic seeks an Editorial Director to lead a team of acquiring editors and EAs publishing high-quality, timely higher ed textbooks and professional titles in subject areas including Education and Criminology/Criminal Justice and trade/general interest titles in subjects including Parenting, Self-Help, Business Management and Personal Finance, Sports, and True Crime. 

The Editorial Direct will be responsible for:

  • Providing global strategic direction for these lists, including growth strategy planning in line with divisional objectives;
  • Managing the team of editors in achieving commissioning, frontlist title delivery, sales, and profitability targets for their lists and maintaining a high level of author service;
  • Annual frontlist budgeting and reforecasting and managing delivery to minimize title slippage
  • working with the Bloomsbury Digital Resource team conceiving and delivering new digital library products;
  • Commissioning a list of titles;
  • Approving smaller revenue titles independently, as well as approving title P&Ls at various stages of development and publication; and
  • Contributing to wider divisional initiatives, such as strategic working groups.

 Successful candidates will have substantial experience and expertise in:

  • Acquiring academic and professional titles in the social sciences, humanities, or related professional fields (experience with academic trade crossover titles a plus);
  • Managing an editorial team to strong performance toward individual and team goals;
  • Forecasting, budgeting, monitoring, and reforecasting sales (at the title, list, and team level) and expenses (including conference travel/T&E); and 
  • Managing and developing new partnerships.

Successful candidates will also demonstrate:

  • Strong commercial awareness including changing market needs, trends, and business models;
  • Strong, positive internal collaboration with other departments, especially production, sales, and marketing, to ensure maximum success of product lines (and fostering that culture within the editorial team); 
  • Confident leadership and decision making and effective coaching skills; and
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in the humanities or social sciences (advanced degree a plus)
  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in academic or professional publishing
  • 5+ years in a leadership or team management role
  • Strong Microsoft Office suite skills
  • Familiarity with Biblio or similar title management system

Salary 

NY : 89,840 – 134,760

All other states : 82,653 – 123,979

Location: 

We are seeking candidates located within the DC, MD, VA region or the NY tri-state area who can work on a hybrid schedule from our Greenbelt MD or NYC office.
