Bookseller Job Description

The position of Bookseller is critical to the success of Queen Anne Book Company. Each bookseller acts as the face of our store, interacting with customers and creating an enjoyable browsing and shopping experience for all. The goal of the Bookseller is to create loyal and enthusiastic customers who consider Queen Anne Book Company THEIR neighborhood bookstore. 

 Specific Areas of Responsibility

1. Maintain a friendly and professional customer service demeanor that includes greeting each customer and determining how to be most helpful

2. Provide needed information to customers; where to specifically locate a book, what books might meet the customer’s needs, and to engage in conversations about books that lead readers to new and exciting titles

3. Conduct all sales transactions efficiently using the IBID POS system,  including returns and exchanges

4. Create special orders for books and other items

5. Shelve books accurately and maintain sections on an ongoing basis

6. Create individual shelf talkers and maintain individual Staff Picks on the QABC website

7. Maintain up-to-date knowledge about new release books and authors, as well as backlist titles

8. Perform back office tasks that may include receiving, returns, donations, etc.

9. Conduct all tasks related to opening and closing the store 

Necessary Traits

1. Being active and engaged reader, with broad reading tastes and a curious nature

2. Have some retail experience and knowledge of POS systems as well as inventory management systems

3. Customer service skills should be second nature to our booksellers

Queen Anne Book Company is an independent bookstore serving the larger Queen Anne neighborhood and parts of downtown Seattle. We opened in 2013, following the closure of Queen Anne Avenue Books, which had served the neighborhood since 1988. We are known for our exceptional customer service, our curated collection of titles, and our ability to match customers with just the right book.  Our owners are Queen Anne residents and are active in the store’s operations.
