Bookkeeper

4209-100 Lassiter Mill Rd, Raleigh, NC, United States, 27609

Position: Full-Time

We are seeking a bookkeeper for our general interest bookstore.

This role is central to operations of our store. A large volume of accounts payable information crosses the desk daily through email, mail, and various online portals. All of these require prompt entry into QuickBooks and subsequent payment according to terms, which can be variable even within a vendor. Additionally, we have a department which works directly with schools, conferences, nonprofit institutions, and businesses, resulting in a good number of accounts receivable to record, for which accurate and timely statements need to be produced monthly.

The bookkeeper works in a shared office space within the bookstore. Due to the high volume of difficult-to-reproduce physical paperwork, neither remote nor hybrid schedules can be accommodated. While the store is open seven days a week for extended hours, for this full-time role we are hiring for a more standard office schedule, to create good overlap between our bookkeeper and our vendors’ offices, school accounting departments, and various financial institutions. The primary exceptions are our annual physical inventory, which may fall on a weekend, and periodic all-store meetings, which all employees are expected to attend and may fall outside usual hours.

Must haves

  • 3 or more years of bookkeeping experience
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to juggle multiple priorities and demands on time
  • Works well independently while remaining a team player
  • Strong understanding of QuickBooks desktop or enterprise

To stand out

  • Familiarity with processes & programs specific to publishing or bookselling, including but not limited to
    • Publisher co-op
    • Batch for Books
    • Anthology
  • At least one year either as the sole bookkeeper or holding variable responsibilities across both payables and receivables within a small department
If you join our team, your coworkers will range from recent holiday hires turned ongoing team members to booksellers who were hired under the store’s original founder. Bookselling requires a great deal of specialized knowledge on top of friendliness and customer service skills, so we seek to be a place where people want to stay and grow.

All employees benefit from access to advanced reader copies of upcoming releases and a sizable employee discount on the vast majority of store stock. Full time employees also receive PTO and life insurance, and are eligible to join our group health insurance and/or the vision plan and dental plan. The store contributes to the health insurance plan.

We encourage members of underrepresented groups to apply for open positions; please don’t self-select out if you are unsure whether you meet all requirements.
