Americanization Editor
Position: Part-Time, Remote
Nosy Crow, an award-winning children’s publisher of books for ages 0-12, is seeking an experienced, creative, and flexible Americanization Editor at its US-based subsidiary, Nosy Crow, Inc, for a remote, temporary, part-time position. The position will entail converting UK books for ages 0-12 to American English, and requires deep understanding of American English and strong familiarity with British English. The ideal candidate is someone upbeat and collaborative who has at least five years of direct experience in an editing or copyediting role, ideally with a children’s trade publisher.
We anticipate that the role will require working 20 to 25 hours a week, and that it will last from approximately early October through April.
Responsibilities
- Americanize UK books for children ages 0-12, converting board, novelty, middle grade, fiction and nonfiction from British English to American English, while editing for: spelling, grammar, punctuation, word usage and vocabulary changes, colloquial phrasing and expressions, cultural differences, and with sensitivity to context and while retaining author’s voice and intent
- Checking illustrations for inaccuracies or cultural differences
- Converting measurements from British to American usage
- Identifying elements that could cause misunderstanding or confusion and may require additional editorial intervention
- Select fact-checking (as required)
Qualifications
- Deep understanding of American English and strong familiarity with British English
- Significant experience Americanizing UK books
- 5 + years' experience in a previous editorial or copyediting role in children’s publishing
- Meticulous attention to detail and excellent communication and writing skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience conveying detailed, complex information clearly and kindly
The salary for this position is $50-$65/ hour.The salary range listed is specific to this position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the role and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
