Bookstore Manager

Position: Full-Time

The North Star is seeking a Bookstore Manager

This is a hands-on role managing the day-to-day operations of the bookstore and working closely with the owners as well both the front-and back-of-house teams. You will create and maintain publisher relationships, hire, schedule and supervise bookselling staff, maintain the organization and presentation of the sales floor, oversee displays and face-outs, create ordering and restocking lists, manage inventory and budgeting, and support author talks including VIP authors, signings, and other literary events. 

We are seeking passionate and skilled candidate interested in launching a historic space that is sure to become iconic. 

Responsibilities

Staff & Store Operations

  • In consultation with owners, hire, train, onboard and manage bookselling staff, including weekly scheduling and day-to-day supervision.
  • Partner with ownership and the general manager on hiring, and conduct six-month and annual performance reviews for bookselling staff.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming bookstore floor.
  • Work with social media and general manager for event, bookstore and book promotion.
  • Provide exemplary and thoughtful customer service.

Inventory & Bookselling

  • Oversee receiving, inventory, special orders, online orders, and shelving through Square and book supplier systems.
  • Collaborate with ownership on title selection and bookstore displays.
  • Monitor stock levels and identify ordering needs.
  • Create new book release displays weekly
  • Coordinating with ownership and booksellers on new book displays, faceouts, staff picks, etc.
  • Facilitating author stock signings as needed 
  • Recovering the bookselling floor during each shift by gathering and restocking items, straightening bookcases
  • Receiving Books
    • Processing any new books received by our book suppliers.
    • Processing special orders as they are received
    • Shipping online or special orders
    • Reshelving received books

Merchandising

  • Maintain engaging displays, face-outs, staff picks, and new-release features.
  • Coordinate author stock signings as needed.

Events

  • Create and support author talks, signings, and other in-store literary events, including managing appropriate event staffing and coordination..
  • Liaise with authors and publicists and assist with event setup and breakdown.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of bookstore management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of books, bookselling, and inventory management.
  • Experience with industry platforms such as Edelweiss, Ingram, and Pubnet.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience supporting author events.
  • Experience with the Square POS system is a plus.
  • Lover of literature and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and be self-sufficient and adapt as needed.
  • Confident leader with the ability to inspire and motivate staff.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • The ability and willingness to perform some manual labor, such as lifting boxes, carrying items and occasionally standing for the entire shift.

Salary: $65,000-70K.

  • Three paid holiday annually
  • 10 days of paid sick leave
  • Potential for annual bonuses based on profitability
